Word of Advice Parrots are not for everyone. They are loud, messy, time-consuming, and have very strong beaks. Before making the decision to own a parrot, do the necessary research and planning. Many species of parrots are available. Some are big, and some are small. Some are very loud, and some are relatively quiet. Some are independent, and some depend on their owners to thrive. The list goes on and on. Don’t just walk into a pet store and pick out the first pretty bird you see. Instead, talk to parrot owners and breeders. Seek out information from magazines, books, and the Internet. Visit local bird shelters and spend time getting to know the different birds. Jessica Hagedorn
